Materials
A fin design is only as good as the materials used for construction. At True Ames, they carefully select the most well-suited types of fiberglass and wood for producing the highest quality fins available. In order to achieve the performance characteristics that have become the standard of solid fiberglass surf fins, True Ames uses E-glass. It is the most common type of fiberglass used in surfboard construction, and its qualities translate with great success into fin construction. E-glass has excellent flex characteristics and performance longevity, while featuring the bonus of outstanding color vibrancy that allows for the variety of colors we offer.
History & Origin
Renny Yater, a master craftsman from Santa Barbara, has significantly impacted surfboard design. Originally from Laguna Beach and Pasadena, Yater started surfing at 14 and shaping at 21. He honed his board-building skills by apprenticing with legendary shapers Hobie Alter and Dale Velzy in the late 1950s. In 1959, he moved to Santa Barbara and opened the Santa Barbara Surf Shop. Early in his career, Yater decided to keep his operation small, dedicating more time to creating and designing efficient, purpose-driven surfboards. His most famous contribution to design is the Yater Spoon model. By incorporating design characteristics from Santa Barbara legend George Greenough, Yater developed a thinner, lighter, and more maneuverable longboard that quickly became a classic among surfers. Yater has been featured in films such as *Surf Crazy* (1959), *Big Wednesday* (1961), and *Surfing Hollow Days* (1963). In *Apocalypse Now* (1979), Colonel Kilgore, played by Robert Duvall, is seen wearing a classic Yater Santa Barbara Surf Shop t-shirt and exclaiming, "grab my Yater spoon!" The fin templates we offer, designed by Yater, are directly influenced by his Santa Barbara surroundings and the Southern California surf culture of the 1960s.
